SEIZURES IN NEWBORNS: THE MISSING EVIDENCE

Acute symptomatic seizures in newborns can be associated with poor neurodevelopmental outcomes (including death, disability, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, but also psychological and emotional issues, learning disabilities, hearing and visual impairments [1–3]. The main etiologies for acute symptomatic seizures are represented by hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), intraventricular haemorrhage, and stroke. Additional causes include central nervous system infections, and glyco-electrolytes imbalances.
