Validation of items on the NDDIE and PHQ-9 associated with suicidal ideation during suicidality screening in patients with epilepsy

Suicide is an important cause of death, making it a global social and health issue [1]. Around 800,000 people worldwide die by suicide per year, with this number increasing in South Korea and worldwide [1–3]. Suicide is also a principal cause of death in patients with epilepsy (PWE) [4, 5], with more suicide attempts and significantly higher mortality among PWE than in the general population. The suicide risk in PWE is associated with psychiatric comorbidities, as well as with younger age at onset, and more frequent seizures [6, 7].
