Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) was in 2010 defined by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) as a failure of adequate trials of two tolerated, appropriately chosen and used antiepileptic drug schedules (whether as monotherapies or in combination) to achieve sustained seizure freedom” [1]. About one third of patients with epilepsy develop DRE, and therefore there is a need for alternative non-medical treatment options such as resective epilepsy surgery, dietary treatments or neurostimulation therapies [2].
