THE EPILEPSY SPECIALIST NURSE: A MIXED-METHODS CASE STUDY ON THE ROLE AND ACTIVITIES

The epilepsy specialist nurse (ESN) role was first created and described in the United Kingdom in 1988 (1), and has evolved since then. There is still a lack of clarity about the functions that constitute the role of an ESN (2,3), however, ESNs have a complex and multifaceted role as they operate in a range of settings, collaborate with different professional groups, and assist both patients and carers (4–6). The ESN has been described as “an expert and essential part of the multidisciplinary team” (7) and it is recommended that every person with epilepsy (PWE) should have access to an ESN (8).
